The Framework

AiRT™

Artificial Intelligence as a Creative Partner

AiRT™ is Simon Aitchison's framework for working with artificial intelligence as a genuine creative collaborator. Not as a generator of images. As a thinking partner in the development of concepts, language, systems, and documentation.

The Concept

What Is AiRT™?

AiRT™ is not about what artificial intelligence can make on its own. It is about what a human artist can make when AI becomes part of the process — a genuine collaborator rather than a tool used in secret or a shortcut to be concealed.

The name is deliberate. AiRT™ places the AI in the middle of the word Art — not at the beginning, not at the end. The human artist is the author. The AI is the instrument. The work that results belongs to the person who directed it, shaped it, and took responsibility for it.

"AiRT™ is not about what AI can make. It is about what a human artist can make when AI becomes part of the process."

AiRT™ was coined by Simon Aitchison in 2026 as part of the broader conceptual framework documented in his manifesto alongside OIRA™ and Paintscape Photography™.

The Principles

How AiRT™ Works

AiRT™ is built on a set of principles that distinguish it from both traditional art practice and from the use of AI as a generative shortcut.

01
Transparency
The use of AI in the creative process is named and acknowledged, not hidden. AiRT™ treats transparency as a creative position, not a disclaimer.
02
Authorship
The human artist remains the author. AI does not replace creative decision-making — it extends and accelerates it. The vision is always human.
03
Collaboration
AI is engaged as a genuine thinking partner — for developing language, concepts, systems, and documentation — not merely for generating outputs.
04
Ownership
The framework is named, documented, and owned. AiRT™ is an original concept by Simon Aitchison — not a general description of AI-assisted art.
In Practice

AiRT™ and Paintscape Photography™

The Paintscape Photography™ project is itself an example of AiRT™ in practice. The branding system, the manifesto, the website, the certificates of authenticity, the conceptual language — all were developed in active collaboration with AI tools. The images themselves are photographs taken by Simon Aitchison. The paintings are made by Simon Aitchison. The concepts are his.

What AI contributed was the capacity to develop, articulate, and systematise those concepts at a pace and depth that would not have been possible alone. AiRT™ does not diminish the work. It accelerates the distance between an idea and its full realisation.

The full documentation of AiRT™ is published in Simon Aitchison's manifesto at simonaitchison.com.
