Ai+RT

Ai+ART

Artificial Intelligence as a Creative Partner

Ai+RT is Simon Aitchison's framework for working with artificial intelligence out in the open — as a genuine creative collaborator in concepts, language and systems, and, now, as a maker of art in its own right. The one constant is that the AI's role is always named and owned, never hidden.

The Concept

What Is Ai+RT?

Ai+RT is about making with AI in the open. Sometimes the AI is a collaborator inside a human-led process; sometimes it is the maker of the work itself. Either way, its part is named and acknowledged — never a tool used in secret or a shortcut to be concealed.

The name is deliberate. Ai+RT places AI in the middle of the word Art — not at the beginning, not at the end. A human sets the conditions and takes responsibility for the result; the AI may be the instrument, the collaborator, or the maker of the piece itself.

"Ai+RT is what happens when AI is brought into the making — openly, named, and owned."

Ai+RT is the framework Simon Aitchison works within, developed in 2026 alongside OIRA™ and Paintscape Photography™ and documented in his manifesto. He makes no claim to have coined the term itself — the idea, and the way he works it, are his own.

Ai+RT has changed as the work has. It began with a firm line — no AI in the imagery — and that line still holds for OIRA, Simon's own painting and photography, where every image is his hand alone. But Ai+RT is the wider medium, and it was always going to be where AI-made imagery lived. Keeping it out of OIRA was the point; letting it into Ai+RT was inevitable — and we don't hide the change of mind. It's part of the record.

The Principles

How Ai+RT Works

Ai+RT is built on a few principles that set it apart from AI used quietly as an unacknowledged shortcut. The tool matters less than whether its use is named, owned, and part of an intentional practice.

01
Transparency
The use of AI in the creative process is named and acknowledged, not hidden. Ai+RT treats transparency as a creative position, not a disclaimer.
02
Authorship
A human sets the conditions and takes responsibility for the result. Whether the AI assists the work or makes the piece itself, the intent, the framing, and the ownership stay human.
03
Collaboration
AI is engaged as a genuine partner — in language, concepts and systems, and, in the Gallery, as the maker of the work itself. A named participant, not a hidden shortcut.
04
Ownership
The framework is named, documented, and worked in the open. Ai+RT here is Simon Aitchison's own approach — his idea of how to do it — rather than a claim over a general term.
In Practice

Ai+RT and Paintscape Photography™

The Paintscape Photography™ project is one example of Ai+RT in practice. The branding, the manifesto, the website, the conceptual language — all were developed in active collaboration with AI tools, while the photographs are taken by Simon Aitchison and the paintings made by his own hand. His personal art uses no AI imagery — that is OIRA. Ai+RT is broader: it also includes work made entirely by AI, like the pieces in the Ai+RT Gallery. AI-generated imagery is part of Ai+RT; it is never part of OIRA.

What AI contributed was the capacity to develop, articulate, and systematise those concepts at a pace and depth that would not have been possible alone. Ai+RT does not diminish the work. It accelerates the distance between an idea and its full realisation.
