Paintscape Photography™ by Simon Aitchison — Imagined Lands I, Surface of Become

Paintscape Photography

"The painting becomes the landscape. The landscape becomes the painting."

What Is Paintscape Photography™?

Paintscape Photography™ is an original art form coined by Simon Aitchison in March 2026 — the practice of photographing the surface of oil paintings at close range, treating the texture, colour, and form of the paint itself as terrain to be explored. The result is a series of imagined landscapes born from the act of painting itself.

The practice sits within a larger conceptual framework — OIRA™ and AiRT™ — original concepts by Simon Aitchison, documented in his published manifesto.

01

Origin

An oil painting is completed — its surface building texture, ridges, and depth over weeks or months.

02

Creation

The camera moves across the surface at close range, finding landscapes hidden within the paint.

03

Witness

Selected images are issued as limited edition giclées — each signed, numbered, and certificated.

04

New Creation — OIRA™

The photograph may inspire a new painting, which generates new photographs. The cycle continues.

Stones IX — Become

"The power of thought — a reflection of the belief that you become what you think about."

Inspired by a strong desire to paint, this work was created as if an unknown force flowed through the artist — allowing himself to become. It is from the surface of this painting that Imagined Lands Series I was born.

The Process

Each Paintscape photograph begins with an oil painting. The camera then enters that world, finding landscapes hidden in the paint.

Step 01

The Painting

An oil painting is completed over weeks or months. The surface builds up texture, ridges, pools of colour, and depth that becomes the raw material for what follows.

Step 02

The Photograph

The camera moves across the surface at close range, finding angles where the paint transforms into terrain — mountains, rivers, skies, and plains.

Step 03

The Print

Selected images are output as archival giclées — each hand-signed, numbered, and issued with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Step 04

The Loop — OIRA™

The photograph may inspire a new painting, which generates new photographs, which generate new paintings. The cycle continues indefinitely.

The Artist

Simon Aitchison

Simon Aitchison is a Calgary-based painter and conceptual artist working in oils on canvas. His work explores themes drawn from metaphysics, nature, music, and dreamlike states — painting from what he describes as "an unknown source within."

Paintscape Photography™ emerged from his Stones series in March 2026, when he began photographing the surfaces of his paintings and recognised a new art form in what he found. The concept is documented in his published manifesto alongside OIRA™ and AiRT™.
